National Junior Honor Society

The Sahuarita Middle School chapter of the National Junior Honor Society recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in the five pillars of NJHS:

• Scholarship
• Leadership
• Service
• Character
• Citizenship

Membership is earned through a formal selection process and represents a commitment that continues throughout the student’s eighth-grade year. NJHS members are expected to serve as positive role models and represent the very best of Sahuarita Middle School.
 

Each spring, current seventh-grade students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher are invited to apply for membership for the following school year.

Meeting the GPA requirement makes a student eligible to apply but does not guarantee selection. Students must complete the full application by the stated deadline and provide two teacher recommendations.

Applications are reviewed by the NJHS advisors using a consistent scoring rubric. The advisors consider:

• Scholarship
• Leadership
• Service
• Character
• Citizenship
• School and community involvement
• Responsibility and time management
• Student reflection
• Overall quality and completeness of the application

Student behavior and disciplinary history may also be considered as part of the selection process. Final membership decisions are made by the NJHS advisors after a thorough review of all application materials. Students are notified of the results before the end of seventh grade. The NJHS induction ceremony will take place at the end of the students’ seventh-grade year.
 

Once selected, NJHS members are expected to:

• Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5
• Demonstrate good character and responsible behavior
• Attend scheduled meetings and NJHS events
• Participate actively in service projects
• Complete approximately 15 to 20 service hours during the school year
• Communicate responsibly and meet all deadlines
• Serve as positive role models at school and in the community

Meetings are generally held twice per month, typically before school at 7:30 a.m. or during Reteach and Enrich. Meeting dates and times will be communicated to members in advance.

Students who do not maintain the academic, behavioral, attendance, service, or participation expectations of NJHS may be placed on probation or considered for removal from the organization.
 

• NJHS membership fee: $20
• NJHS shirt: $25

Payments may be made through PowerSchool or at the SMS front office. Arizona Tax Credit funds may be used toward the membership fee but cannot be used to purchase the NJHS shirt.
 

NJHS provides students with opportunities to:

• Be recognized for their academic effort, character, and leadership
• Develop meaningful leadership and teamwork skills
• Participate in service projects that support the school and community
• Build confidence, responsibility, and communication skills
• Connect with other motivated student leaders
• Strengthen future high school, scholarship, and leadership applications
