Counseling

The Sahuarita Middle School counseling team supports students’ academic success, social and emotional growth, and preparation for high school. We work collaboratively with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners to help every student feel supported, connected, and successful.

Students are assigned to a counselor according to the first letter of their last name.

How We Support Students

SMS counselors provide individual, small-group, classroom, and schoolwide support in the following areas:

Academic Success

  • Organization, study skills, and time management
  • Goal setting and academic planning
  • Problem-solving and decision-making
  • Course selection and schedule support
  • High school transition preparation

Social and Emotional Development

  • Coping skills and emotional regulation
  • Peer relationships and healthy communication
  • Conflict resolution and problem-solving
  • Self-awareness, confidence, and resilience
  • Leadership, responsibility, and self-advocacy skills
  • Support during personal, family, or school-related challenges

Collaboration and Student Advocacy

  • Consultation with families, teachers, and staff
  • Individual and family support during school-related concerns
  • Referrals to school and community resources
  • Crisis response and student reentry support
  • Advocacy to help students access the support they need

School counselors provide short-term, school-based support. When a student needs ongoing therapeutic or specialized services, counselors can help families connect with appropriate community resources.

Contacting a Counselor

Our counselors maintain an open-door policy. Students are welcome to stop by the counseling offices when they need support.

If a counselor is meeting with another student, assisting with an urgent situation, or otherwise unavailable, students may use the counselor request form located on the Chromebook outside the counseling offices. The counselor will follow up with the student as soon as possible based on the urgency of the concern.

Families may contact their student’s assigned counselor by phone or email. Emails are not monitored outside regular school hours and should not be used for emergencies.

Schedule Change Requests

If you would like to request a schedule change, please complete the online Schedule Change Request Form. A paper copy may also be picked up in the front office.

You can find the Schedule Change Request Form on the page linked here

Submitting a request does not guarantee that a schedule change can be made. Requests are reviewed based on course availability, class size, academic need, and scheduling requirements.
